A CLEARER SIDE-BY-SIDE
A 401(k) and permanent life insurance are designed for different roles. This overview helps frame the questions worth reviewing with your benefits, tax, and insurance professionals.
| Consideration | TraditionalRetirement | GOALLPermanent insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Employer-sponsored retirement savings account; plans may offer an employer match. | Permanent indexed universal life insurance; underwriting, policy design, and ongoing funding apply. |
| Growth | Returns and fees depend on the investment lineup. Account value can rise or fall with investments. | Indexed credits can be subject to floors, caps, participation rates, and fees. A crediting floor is not a net cash-value guarantee; cash value can fall. |
| Access | Loans or withdrawals depend on the plan and permitted exceptions, with possible taxes, penalties, or repayment requirements. | Policy loans accrue interest and surrender conditions or charges can apply. Loans can reduce available value and death benefits. |
| Retirement taxes | Pre-tax withdrawals are generally taxable. Roth treatment and other exceptions depend on the account and applicable rules. | Potential tax advantages for withdrawals or loans depend on basis, non-MEC status, and keeping the policy in force. |
| Family & living benefits | A remaining account balance may pass to beneficiaries, but the account is not itself life insurance. | Death and living benefits are governed by policy eligibility and terms. Accelerated benefits can reduce a death benefit and are not health or long-term care insurance. |

GOALL stands for Growth Only Automated Life & Legacy. The program described in these materials uses permanent life insurance, including indexed universal life (IUL), to combine family protection, potential cash value, and eligible living-benefit features. It is life insurance—not a qualified retirement plan, bank account, or direct investment in an index.
Not automatically. GOALL may be considered as a supplemental insurance strategy alongside an existing retirement plan. Employer matches, fees, taxes, insurance needs, your budget, and the opportunity cost of premiums all matter. A licensed professional should compare your actual options before you change an existing plan.
No. An IUL interest-crediting floor may limit negative index credits, but premiums, insurance charges, other fees, withdrawals, and loan interest can still reduce cash value. Caps and participation rates can limit credits. Non-guaranteed values can change, and sufficient funding is needed to keep the policy in force.
If enough cash value has accumulated, a policy may allow withdrawals or loans under its terms. Access is not unrestricted or cost-free: surrender charges, loan interest, tax consequences, and reductions in death benefits can apply. Loans can contribute to lapse. Traditional retirement plans also have access options and exceptions, so compare your actual plan rules.
Death benefits are generally income-tax-free under applicable law. Withdrawals up to basis and loans from an in-force, non-modified-endowment policy may receive favorable tax treatment, but conditions and exceptions apply. Lapse or surrender with a loan can create taxable income. Living-benefit riders require a qualifying event, may involve costs, and reduce the death benefit; they are not substitutes for health or long-term care insurance.
No. The original GOALL materials contain hypothetical scenarios, not a personalized forecast or carrier guarantee. Employer contributions depend on the employer and program design. Actual results depend on underwriting, premiums, crediting assumptions, policy costs, loans, and ongoing management. Ask for a current carrier illustration showing both guaranteed and non-guaranteed values.
